I like to touch base with all the members from time to time, even if it's just to repeat things that have already been said in the fabulous Table Talk newsletters! The majority of the club plays daytime bridge which I don't often get to attend so this is my way of keeping in your ear.
This weekend we have our interclub teams heading down to Rotorua to take on the other clubs from around the Bay and try and retain the Ib Thulin shield for another year. This year we are represented by Di and Hugh McAlister, Judy Pawson and Kate Terry as our Open Team. Stacey Hilton, Macolm Christie, Joy Bates and Colin Roberts as our Intermediate Team. And Rebecca Taylor, Kerri Friar, Kate Wade and Mark Wardill as our Junior Team. Good luck to you all!
Also on Sunday our weekly supervised play sessions continue until the 18th of August at which point we go back to running these every third Sunday of the month. 1pm start, no partner required and I'll be on hand for any questions on any topic! Somewhat related footnote: the Monday lunchtime session has now come to and end and that group will be merging with the Thursday social group.
Next Wednesday the Cherrywood Shoes Ladies Pairs is on. This is a standard two session tournament starting at 10am. Entries are still open and there is still plenty of space! Enter here: https://www.nzbridge.co.nz/events/10617/Tauranga-Ladies-All_grades-Pairs.
Next Thursday night we have the return of the very popular Tauranga Sixes. This event involves teams of two Junior, two Intermediate and two Open players. The pairs play in a Swiss Pairs event against the other pairs of the same grade over four weeks. Please register your teams on the noticeboard at the club, if you're keen to play but don't have team mates get in touch and we'll see what we can do. You might even get to see the first lady Angela Newton playing the first night...
On Tuesday August the 13th I will be running the sister lesson to the Stayman lesson I ran a few weeks back and this will cover, you guessed it, Transfers! This is a BIG topic as it covers not just the basic transfers to a major but also the transfer to a weak minor and what all the 3-level suit bids mean once you're playing transfers. For all of you rebidding the major that you transferred to with only 5 cards in the suit, you need to attend this lesson! All the details are here: https://taurangabridge.helloclub.com/public/event/66a2e7642523757b31031bea/intermediate-lesson-tranfers.
I think that will do for now! To those of you about to play this afternoon I wish you a very pleasant afternoon.
